Last week I said my goal was to read up to part three of The Book Thief. This week, I am almost finished reading part five. The Book Thief has developed a complex conflict. When the Hubermann’s begin hiding a Jewish man in their basement, Liesel is unsure whether or not if she can trust this new man. But as the story goes on, Liesel and Max Vandenburg (the Jewish man hiding in her basement) become good friends. My favorite part of their friendship is when Max asks if Rosa Hubermann can cut his hair because it was getting long. Rosa, of course, goes into a tizzy trying to find the scissors and gets mad at her husband, Hans, for suggesting she cut Max’s hair; for she would make many mistakes. A few minutes later, Max ascends from the basement with his own pair of rusty scissors and hands them to Liesel, an eleven year old girl, telling her to “make as many mistakes as you want". In my opinion, this is a pivotal point in Max and Liesel's relationship because Max doesn't care what his hair will look like if Liesel cuts it and this strengthens their friendship.
In addition, the book is probing many questions from myself. I wonder how the it will end. Right now there is no suggestion to how far into time the plot will take place. Also, I didn't really realize until today that in the end, because this book is about the Holocaust, someone is probably going to die. The narrator has already told of one person's death but, I wonder who else could die. It makes me sad because I have become attached to the characters and couldn't bear to read about any of their deaths. Though I do have my guesses, I am now eager to finish reading this book to see how everything will end. Furthermore, with the movie adaptation of The Book Thief coming out November 15th, I also want to have completed reading the book by the time it comes to my local theater so that I may go see and compare it. Although, I am not sure how realistic this goal is.
Finally, by next week I want to have finished reading part six and have a better idea of what option of web service I am going to use to post my book reviews. However, I am still torn over what to use because I have visions of how both could turn out, but I will let you know what I am using as soon as I decide!
