In addition, in the coming week and time off over Christmas break, I will be writing the book review on Delirium, talking to my mentor about another book, and figure out what kind of web service I should use for posting my book reviews. One of my New Year’s goals is to start reading a variety of genres of books. So far I’ve been reading the same romance type books since the start of 20 Time. And in order to succeed as a book review blogger, variety is a must (as told to me by my mentor). In a way I think this is going to benefit myself in the long run. It will expose me to more styles of writing and storyline’s.
This week, I finished reading Delirium. In my opinion the currently tending books are those of dystopian societies where the main characters are always going against the society’s rules. Delirium is one of these books. In my previous blog posts I’ve talked about how Lena was always following society’s rules until she met a boy whom made her realize all the wonderful feelings associated with love. But, in their society love is a forbidden disease that causes all the world’s problems: death, rage, disease, ect. Upon finishing the book, there were many twists and turns in the plot. For example, Lena decides, after hearing the truth about what really happened to her mother, that the society has nothing to offer her other than being trapped in a box for the rest of her life. Therefore, the last few chapters of the book focus on what Lena plans to do in order to escape the life society has laid out before her. Questions such as how can Lena be with the boy she loves and whether or not Lena can successfully evade the security within the society to escape, are frequently wondered by the reader at the end of the book.

This week I read up to chapter 18, page 288. Once the conflict was presented within Delirium, the book is hard to put down. At first I thought that this book was going to be one where everything exciting and interesting occurs the last 50 pages of the book. Due to the fact that the beginning had some dry spots in my opinion. But now that I am past that, I find myself reading in every spare moment I have; which is not a lot of time being a high school student. Last week, I commented on the fact that, the main character, Lena was unwilling to allow herself to love in the society where love is a disease and crime. Lena has always followed the rules until now; she sees that the society has been lying to everyone and maybe love does not necessarily lead to death and despair. Because of this, Lena becomes infected with love and accepts the consequences of being in love. I won't tell you who Lena falls in love with, because that is one of the surprises in the book. By falling in love, Lena now wishes she had more time before she receives the cure- a procedure done within the society to eliminate the ability to love from a person.
In addition, I will continue reading, at least two chapters, for next Friday. With Delirium becoming more complex every chapter, I hope to have finished reading this book before the end of the month. The book also makes the reader wonder about how Lena will survive without being able to love. This make me wonder whether or not Lena can escape taking the cure or is one of the few people that the cure doesn't work on. Therefore, I think that it is a reachable goal of finishing Delirium because I am at page 288 out of 441; about half way through the book. Finally, I would like to mention that Delirium is part of a trilogy, and if you would like to see a book review done for the next two books, comment and let me know; I would love to read the rest of series. This week I accomplished reading another 50 pages, in Delirium, as promised. After being stuck in a dry spot, it is interesting to see the conflict of the book take off. Love is a terrible disease within Lena’s society, therefore a cure has been created in order to get rid of love. But when Lena realizes that, like her mother, there may be someone she loves, can Lena with stand the consequences of the deliria. This is the central conflict of the book once Lena meets Alex and begins to socialize and get to know him. However, Lena is stubborn and refuses to let love into her life, knowing that it is against the rules of society. The twists and turns of the novel begin in the ending of chapter nine.
In addition, I also edited and revised The Book Thief review with the help of my mentor. Although I still struggle with indecisiveness over how to post my book reviews, it was a relief talking to my uncle over Thanksgiving. He told me about different web run programs that would allow me to put the reviews up. I realized that it is important to do research on these different programs in order to see what will best fit my style. My uncle also has offered to sponsor my review blog or website to help get attention from an audience of people. It think this will be great for my book reviews, as he will be able to target a greater number of people who can help spread the word about my book reviews to more teenagers reading. Finally, my new goal for the coming week will be to have read another 50 pages in Delirium. I will also be doing research over different websites and blog programs to see what will best fit my needs. Therefore, my new goal on when my book review blog or website to be up will be by the New Year and I hope to make this deadline I’ve set for myself. After finishing The Book Thief last week, I spent my Friday 20 Time writing the review. It was a lot harder than the first book review I wrote because The Book Thief had a much more complex plot and conflicts. The problem I kept running into, was whether or not I was including the right or wrong information within the review. My goal is to have well written reviews that encourage other readers to read the book, not give enough information of what happens so that my readers already know what the book is about. In addition, last weekend I went to Barnes and Noble and brought my next book. It is called Delirium by Lauren Oliver. So far, I've read 90 pages and really like the story. The book is about 17 year old Lena, who in her dystopian society cannot wait to have the procedure, that all 18 year olds undergo, that will change her life forever by taking away the ability to love. In her world, love is the reason for all the problems that societies have. Although Lena's never loved any boy throughout her life, this trait is being challenged when she meets Alex. As a result, Lena is constantly wondering of whether or not Alex has feelings for her. This is as far as I've got in the book but I think the rest of the book will be really good and I am anxious to see where the book will end because Delirium is part of a trilogy.
Furthermore, my goal for next week will be to have read another 50 pages in Delirium. I will also be in contact with my mentor to talk about editing and revising my review for The Book Thief. I hope to have this done after Thanksgiving. Another thing I have to discuss with my mentor is if a blog will be accessible to the audience I am targeting. I've decided that a blog would be easier to create to post my book reviews on but, I am unsure if this will allow for the easy access I want my readers to have. On a last note, I will continue reading Delirium over Thanksgiving break. |
