I read this book during the past summer and will say I was pleasantly surprised from the start. The description on the back cover does no justice to the marvelous story inside. When I first started reading the book, I didn’t really know what it was about or what to expect. What was the author’s goal, theme, overarching purpose of telling the story? These were questions I was unsure of from the get go. But I soon began to understand as I rapidly worked my way through the novel. There wasn’t necessarily a main conflict present in the story but rather multiple conflicts regarding the difficulties of growing up as a teenager. Though I’m not a teenager boy, I was able to relate and understand the emotions felt by both Dante and Ari. These two seemingly different boys both had their faults and issues, but it was the journey of how they overcame them, together, that made them such good friends that anyone can relate to. Our friends are some of the most important people in our lives. They sympathize with us, provide insight on our problems, share similar interests, and most importantly are always there for us. Friends, aside from our close family, are some of the only people who truly get us and know us inside and out. These two boys reminded me of my own friends and how lucky I am to have such special and amazing people in my life. And though Dante and Ari’s friendship turned into something more towards the end of the novel, I still believe this a 5/5 star novel to be read by all, readers young and old. This book wasn’t necessarily about one specific story but rather the ever changing struggles we experience on our journey of discovering ourselves.
When two seemingly different boys meet at the community pool one summer, no one would guess that they would befriend one another. Ari lacks confidence, is guarded, and wonders what life would be like if his phantom of a brother hadn't been sent to prison. Dante is talkative, has a happy-go-lucky personality, and sees the world through bright and wondrous eyes. Yet as these boys spend more time together, they form a bond and realize the true power of friendship. Follow Dante and Ari through this coming of age story as the two grow to learn more about themselves and the secrets of the universe surrounding them.
