Delirium is another book about a dystopian society with the female heroine who defies the laws set in her world. However the question I toggled with was whether or not it was as good as some of the others dystopian society books. It’s not like The Hunger Games, as there is no revolution, but Delirium is very similar along the romance lines of the Matched andThe Selection trilogies. Furthermore, Delirium is very predictable, I’m not sure if I should even read the second book because I can almost tell you without reading it what happens. On the other hand, Delirium has some great plot qualities. It is definitely a very unique world and in my opinion Oliver does a great job creating a loveless world where even the reader can become miserable at times. Lauren Oliver also creates this first love that I’m sure many people can relate to. The jitters of when you’ll see them again, the way one’s breath catches when holding hands or just before a kiss when your head tilts ever so slightly. It’s all real, and that’s what makes Lena and Alex’s love story impossible to put down. Therefore, I would give 3 out of 5 stars to Delirium and recommend it to any hopeless romantic.
Delirium, written by Lauren Oliver, is about soon to be eighteen-year-old Lena; who lives in a dystopian society where amor deliria nervosa or love is a disease curable by a procedure given to all citizens around their eighteenth birthday. In the beginning of the novel, Lena lives a placid life, with her aunt, uncle, and cousins, and wishes for nothing more than to have the procedure done and be cured from love. But on the day Lena and her best friend Hana go to be evaluated, a stampede of cows cause all the tests to have to be redone and this provokes many questions from Lena and Hana about the Invalids living in the outside world. Invalids are people who live uncured of love hidden outside and away from society. But, it is not until Lena meets and falls in love with Alex, that she realizes the faults within her city and the truth about love and her deceased mother. Because of this, Lena begins questioning the cure and love itself. Therefore, Lena and Alex try to escape from the society to live a life with love but the question remains; will they succeed or be caught by the society?
